For nearly 40 years Sergio’s Pizza, Pasta and Craft Beer has been crafting excellent pizza in Virginia.

Sergio’s is a heavy hitter in the local pizza and pasta, and craft beer scene, serving up authentic Italian-American fare based on Sicilian roots and family recipes. Originally opened in 1985 by Antonio and Gaetano Buffa, it was named after Gaetano’s son. The pizzeria passed to Vito Conigliaro and his son, Joe, in 1991 after they emigrated from Carini. Joe met his wife, Cynthia, there, and they have raised their three daughters behind the counter. Joe and Cynthia’s eldest daughter, Jessica Conigliaro, 27, is now the General Manager. She began working at Sergio’s at eight years old. She studied business and hospitality at George Mason University to expand and improve the family’s brands. Reflecting on a legacy older than she is, she says. “Sergio’s means everything to our family. We are deeply grateful for our loyal customers—many of whom have been dining with us since the beginning. It’s especially heartwarming to see families spanning three generations still making Sergio’s a part of their lives.”

She says her favorite family recipe from the menu is Tortellini Milano—cheese-filled pasta in a rich, creamy pink sauce, paired with savory sausage, mushrooms, and red peppers. “It’s comfort in a bowl.” Their tried and true pasta menu includes Fresh pappardelle, fettuccine Alfredo, gnocchi Carbonara, and rigatoni a la vodka. Meatballs, wings, the required antipasti, subs, and panini are all accounted for in tasty fashion.

Most notable, though, is pizza. Sergio’s offers pizza in just about every style, shape, and size you can imagine. Starting with a classic, tender, hand-tossed New York-style crust, that is available in red or white, 10”, 14”, 16”, 23”, and a mega 28”. Also available on their regular menu:  a 12”x12” crispy “Drunken” Grandma-style pan pizza, decadent Detroit-style dolloped with ricotta, stromboli, and calzones. But they also have been known to pop up with Chicago Deep Dish, Roman, Sicilian style pizza, and even breakfast pizza specials.

“(Sergios was) the first to introduce Detroit-style pizza to the Richmond area,” Says Jessica, “Simply because it’s one of our favorites and we couldn’t find it anywhere nearby.” Her father is driven to set trends and explore  the art of pizza. “After taking a pizza-making class in California, my dad reignited his passion for the craft and brought his knowledge back to train our staff.” They serve excellent hand-tossed pizza, Grandma Style and Detrioit style pizza and they regularly post specials exploring other regional and international styles.

Other menu standouts include over 30 craft beers and enormous house-made mozzarella sticks and mini Bada-Bing Bites. After gaining notoriety for their 5” hand-breaded “mozzarella logs,” the Conigliaros took their idea to the bank and opened Joey D’s Frozen Foods in 2023.  They now have distribution deals across 37 states for their frozen cheese novelty products based out of their facility in Richmond.
